Westworld Season 4 Episode 3 recap: Bernard and Ashley return

Two more beloved Westworld characters – Bernard Lowe (Jeffrey Wright)  and Ashley Stubbs (Luke Hemsworth) return in the third Season 4 episode Annees Folles.

The episode’s title is taken from a French term to explain the social and cultural transformation of the Roaring 20s, which is apt since that’s the exact time frame the new Westworld park is set in.

Last week’s episode showed Maeve (Thandiwe Newton) and Caleb (Aaron Paul) exploring the new park, which they continue to do in the third episode.

The episode begins with Bernard opening his eyes and putting on his glasses, as Josh takes the maze from his hands and runs off.

While Josh goes outside, Bernard finds a much different setting, as a tree in front of him suddenly is set on fire.

He walks into the saloon when a white horse trots by, as he sees a number of dead hosts lying on the ground.

He goes into another much different setting, following the white horse, when he finds the circular maze on the ground and looks up at a massive tower – the same one that was teased in drawings in previous episodes.

Bernard walks inside and finds the white horse, when Bernard is met by a man named Akecheta (Zahn McClarnon) who says it’s nice to see him again.

‘Where am I?’ Bernard asks, with the man saying he’s in ‘our world, as Bernard asks where are the others?

‘In worlds of their own choosing, they have no reason to be there,’ as Bernard says, ‘the world out there is in trouble, it needs our help.’

The man says he’s in love with the humans, but the man says he won’t go with him but he gives him a gift.

He says time is much different there and all paths end in destruction, and he must intervene if there is any hope of survival.

Bernard sees flashes of other shots flashing all at once, as the man asks if he understands where all this is going, and Bernard says he does.

‘Do you think you can save them?’ the man asks, as Bernard says, ‘I have seen a path.’

Bernard says in every scenario he dies, but the man says not every scenario and he can live in this world, asking what it will be.

The episode cuts to a dusty Bernard sitting in a hotel room with a halo around his head, as Ashley arrives, saying he thought this day would never come.

Ashley says he’s been gone for years, as Bernard says he has eliminated half of the possibilities.

Bernard thanks him for keeping the place clean and tells Ashley to bring the shovel, which Ashley finds outside and puts it in the trunk of his car.

Bernard comes out, cleaned up, saying he needs to test a few things on how to save the world.

‘Why would I expect anything else?’ Ashley asks before getting in the car and taking off.

The episode picks back up in Westworld, as Caleb and Maeve explore the Roaring Twenties park, with Caleb says she never would have imagined it like this.

A man bumps into Caleb as Maeve says it’s ‘all a sideshow.’

They come across a group of cops looking for a wanted fugitive, as Maeve says they have to make their way underground because they control everything there.

A can falls on the ground – mimicking the same scene of Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) in the original park, but Maeve tells her not to pick it up.

They make their way into what was Maeve’s old saloon, now called the Butterfly Club, saying they made some upgrades but it’s still the same old story.

A couple walks by as the woman says she wants to find the hidden narrative.

They take a seat as Maeve enjoys a drink of cheri, saying now they wait, ‘for history to repeat itself.’

The episode transitions back to Bernard and Ashley, who pull into an old roadside diner.

They take a seat in a booth, as Ashley asks what they’re doing here, as Bernard says, ‘Trying to discern what here is here.’

Ashley says he’ll come back weirder than he left, as Bernard predicts what Ashley will order, asking the waitress to borrow a pen.

Bernard says he saw all of the worlds that might have been, and most of them end in disaster, but if he can ‘trigger a small series of events’ they might have a chance to save the world.

Bernard watches two men leave, as he follows them outside and grabs a knife and a bag, as Ashley puts Call Me on the jukebox.

Bernard starts a fight with the two men and ultimately kills them both.

The episode cuts to Caleb’s daughter Frankie (Celeste Clark) who says she’s trying to reach her dad on the radio.

Caleb’s wife Uwade (Nozipho Mclean) says her dad had to go away, as Caleb’s associate Carver gets them ready to go to the safe houses.

Back at the diner, Bernard loads the two corpses into the trunk of their car and slams it shut, as Ashley comes out and says they don’t need the car anymore.

Ashley says loitering in the parking lot of a diner is the key to saving the world, but Bernard says, ‘No, she is,’ as a car pulls up and a woman (Aurora Perrineau) gets out asking if Bernard has a death wish.

He shows her the maze and asks how long she’s been with the cause.

She pulls two guns on them, as Ashley grabs one of the guns as Bernard says she will take her bag and look inside.

He reveals one of the men was a host and he wants her to take her to the labs but she says nothing is there.

He says her organization is hiding there because they’re looking for something and he can help them find what they’re looking for.

She hands them zipties for some ‘peace of mind’ and blindfolds as they take off.

Back in the park, Caleb is approached by a prostitute but Maeve says her services won’t be necessary.

A cop is gunned down in the street as a mobster enters the saloon while his team guns down others in the street.

Maeve says he is a ‘shabby imitation of someone i used to know’ as they steal the safe, but Maeve kills the mobster and the head prostitute, while Caleb guns down their woman i who comes in.

‘That should be sufficient bait for the undertaker,’ Maeve says.

The episode transitions back to Caleb’s daughter, who says her dad’s friend Carver (Manny Montana) got Bear Bear dirty.

She finds drops of blood on the ground and finds a man with a slit throat, telling her mom she found a dead body… which is the real Carver, not the host pretending to be him that they’ve been interacting with.

Uwade finds a gun before Carver comes back inside.

Back in the desert, the mystery woman stops the truck and cuts Bernard and Ashley’s zipties, telling them to step outside and ‘make yourselves helpful.’

She asks them each to pull on handles to disable the laser grid and allowing them to drive through, as Ashley says Bernard should have given him a heads up about the death laser.

Back in the park, Caleb and Maeve put themselves on the undertaker’s truck to get into the underground section of the park.

They find a number of the hosts going through ‘behavioral training’ as Maeve jokes ‘their lessons didn’t stick with me.’

She grabs a tablet and tries to access the central map, but something’s wrong because there’s nothing here, and there’s ‘something off.’

She says nothing is being controlled from here as an alarm goes for a security breach, while the woman from the saloon arrives, saying it has to be the secret level.

A massacre unfolds as Maeve says none of this is real as Maeve gets shot in the shoulder as Caleb lays down some cover fire.

Maeve opens a door to an elevator which they get in, as Caleb starts repairing her bullet wound, saying she saved his life before and he’s returning the favor.

They get to the next level where they find faceless clones walking around, performing a number of tests.

Caleb asks if this is another game within the game but Maeve doesn’t think so, as Caleb says it looks like some kind of a parasite.

They find another faceless clone opening jars of black goo, before they come across a section with thousands of flies, with Maeve saying they’re infecting the flies and they seem to like Caleb.

Maeve hears something but Caleb can’t, as Maeve wonders if it’s at a frequency he simply can’t here, as Maeve accesses another section.

Carver comes inside and says it’s time to go, but he can’t find them anywhere, as he pulls his gun out and walks upstairs.

He starts searching for them upstairs when he opens the closet door with a gun out, though we don’t see what he finds.

The mystery woman stops the truck and they all get out, as Bernard asks where the rest of them are, as more arrive in trucks and other vehicles, all with guns pointed.

The leader (Daniel Wu) takes his helmet off and looks at the bag, asking how he got this, as Bernard says they’re in danger and he can help them.

‘There’s a weapon buried in these sands. I know where it is,’ Bernard tells them.

The episode cuts back to the bowels of the park, as they find a device that is making the bizarre sound Maeve heard.

Caleb says the sound is controlling them but Maeve doesn’t think they’re hosts, as we see people performing a number of cognitive tests.

These people are seen being forced to kill themselves but Maeve can’t override it with her powers.

They’re stunned when they find Caleb’s daughter Frankie, as Caleb says he has to find her and asks her to open up the doors.

Caleb frantically yells for his daughter Frankie and runs through the facility, finally finding her, but she won’t respond to him.

Maeve isn’t having much luck opening the door, as Frankie starts stacking her blocks, ass Caleb tries to force the door open.

Frankie wipes out all the blocks and looks at the gun, as Maeve finally opens the door and Caleb rushes to Frankie.

Maeve is watching when she says no and starts to rush out, when she’s met by host William, saying he’s been looking forward to this.

They start to fight but Maeve puts him down with a few shotgun blasts before running out of the room.

Frankie says Caleb can’t leave here because ‘she wants you to stay,’ which confuses Caleb, as host William comes back and tackles Maeve, saying, ‘I think you’ll find I’m not quite the man I was anyway.’

Caleb asks if mom is there, as Frankie says she’s not, adding Hale didn’t need any of them, all they needed was him.

Caleb finally realizes that it’s not really is daughter, as the host Frankie says, ‘This won’t take long daddy,’ as her face opens up and dozens of flies spill out, surrounding a screaming Caleb as the episode comes to an end.

The preview for next week’s episode teases Caleb with Charlotte, asking what she did to him, as she says what she’s going to do to all of them.

‘You’re beginning to see it, aren’t you?’ Charlotte says, as the teaser comes to an end.
