Npower News: FG Approves NPower Training
In a major development for the NPower initiative, the Federal Government (FG) of Nigeria has approved a significant amount of N19.24bn.
This funding aims to train 50,000 non-graduate NPower beneficiaries and to support various other infrastructural projects.
Funding Breakdown
The approved sum is to be allocated as follows:
- NPower Training: N14.21bn will be used for training non-graduate NPower beneficiaries. This training will be conducted by four federal agencies, namely the National Institute of Transport Technology, Industrial Training Fund, National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism, and the Hydraulic Equipment Development Institute.
- Infrastructure Development: N3.05bn will be spent on the procurement of taxiway lighting systems in the Port Harcourt, Lagos, and Abuja airports. A sum of N605m is allocated as consultancy services for the Dadin Kowa 40MW power project in Gombe State. N1.3bn will be used for furnishing the 10-storey headquarters of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency in Victoria Island, Lagos.
Impact on NPower Program
“We’re now in Batch C of that programme. We have received a report from these agencies of what we have done thus far and we are very satisfied with them. We have engaged them again and this is what we brought to the Council for approval and it graciously approved,” said Sadiya Farouk, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Social Development and Disaster Management.
The Minister also highlighted the policy on the homegrown school feeding program, which has significantly reduced the number of out-of-school children nationwide.
Notable Developments
The Aviation Minister, Hadi Sirika, revealed the council’s approval for the establishment of an aviation leasing company. This will allow entrepreneurs in civil aviation to lease equipment affordably within Nigeria. The Minister of Water Resources, Suleiman Adamu, announced the FG’s approval of N605m as a five-year consultancy fee to supervise the Dadinkowa 40MW hydropower project.
The Minister of State for Transportation, Ademola Adegoroye, announced the approval of N1.3bn as furniture costs for the newly-acquired 10-storey building of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency in Victoria Island, Lagos.
New Universities Approval
The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, revealed that the FG approved the establishment of 37 new private universities nationwide. This approval raises the total number of universities approved for establishment under the Buhari-led government to 72, including 14 Federal Universities, 21 State Universities, and 37 Private Universities.
