Update: Game PS5 consoles have now sold out, but other drops are expected this week. Read on for more information.

The PS5 console was released more than six months ago, but if you’re a gamer you’ll know how hard it has been to get your hands on the latest device.

Restock issues have been plaguing Sony since the reveal, and despite stores reopening in the UK as lockdown measures lift, the situation doesn’t seem to be getting much better.

It’s become so difficult for people to get their hands on a PS5 that it’s spawned a whole Twitter community of stock trackers, as well as a 24,500-strong community of Redditors all trying to nab the console before it sells out again.

Over the past month, we’ve been tracking updates across all the major retailers, with Game, Argos and Amazon’s restock coming and going in the flash of an eye.

But, it’s not all bad news, as Game is expected to restock this week, and there’s also rumours that Very and John Lewis & Partners will follow suit.

Owing to the high demand, we’re on hand to help you get your hands on the coveted Playstation by keeping an eye on all major retailers, as well offering the latest details on any rumoured releases. Follow live so you don’t miss out.

Biomutant PS5 – pre-order now

(Thq Nordic)

In other news… Biomutant is finally being released on the PS5 next week! Well, it’s actually being released on the PS4, Xbox One and the PC, but thanks to the wonders of backwards compatibility, you’ll be able to play it on your PS5.

The post-apocalyptic kung fu fable was revealed all the way back in 2017, so it’s been a long time coming. Anyone that pre-orders Biomutant will automatically gain access to the Mercenary class as a DLC from day one. The game will be available to buy from 25 May and is available to preorder now (£49.99, Amazon.co.uk).

PS5 disc addition vs digital addition

(Sony)

What’s the difference between the PS5 disc addition – which Sony is referring to only as the PlayStation 5 – and the digital addition? Well, The Independent’s technology editor, Andrew Griffin said “very little”.

The first thing that really distinguishes the two from one another is the price. Followed by the fact that the lack of disc drive means the digital edition it’s slightly smaller (W390mm x H92mm x D260mm) than the PlayStation 5 (W390mm x H104mm x D260mm).

In terms of the cost, the normal disc version is £449 in the UK, while the digital edition sans the disc drive is £359.

Argos PS5 drop

Game had a massive drop of PlayStation 5 consoles this morning, which lasted for more than an hour. Now it’s another retailer’s turn to take the baton.

Stock at Argos became available on 10 May at around 3am, but it sold out within a few hours. You can still add the console to your basket, but when you try to checkout, you won’t find any in stock at any store – near or far. Keep checking back because you could still bag the PS5 from Argos. If you’re struggling to get one, the iOS and Android app are known to perform better than the retailer’s website.

PS5 release date

(Sony)

The PS5 was released on 19 November in the UK and sold out instantly. Some of the people who pre-ordered the console on Amazon found themselves greeted with not a shiny new PS5, but a bag of grain, a grill or some cat food instead. Despite being out for more than six months now, as you likely already know, the PS5 is still extremely difficult to find. Very is being touted as the next retailer to release a drop of the new PlayStation.

Searching for a PS5 wall mount?

(Amazon)

For those of you looking to mount your PS5 to the wall (once it arrives, obviously), you might want to try the Floating Grip PS5 wall mount (£19.99, Amazon.co.uk). While we haven’t tested it out ourselves, it has 158 five-star reviews on Amazon. You can mount it right next to your TV or even behind it so that no wires are on display. Front on, you won’t be able to see any part of the mounting equipment itself – great for those of you keen on having that “PS5 floating in the air” aesthetic.

Considering a Nintendo Switch instead of a PS5?

(iStock/The Independent)

If all the stock issues associated with Sony’s latest console has got you feeling a little, well, over it, perhaps consider a Nintendo Switch (£279.99, Argos.co.uk) as a viable alternative.

With fierce competition between the best gaming console, in our review, our writer noted that “Nintendo has never been afraid of taking risks with its console designs, and the Switch console, first released in 2017, is a perfect example of them getting it just right.”

As “a home console that can be detached from a TV dock and used as a portable device,” it’s “well-suited to couch multiplayer, a mode that is facilitated by the novel controller design, which allows each controller to separate into two parts, each functioning independently.”

The PS5 exclusives to know

(Sony)

There are a number of games available exclusively to those who own one of the coveted PlayStation consoles since they can only be found on Sony’s new machine. One of those is Astro’s Playroom (free, Playstation.com), which was in fact best on test in our review of PS5 games.

“A love letter to a 27-year legacy, Astro’s Playroom serves as both an introduction to the features of the PS5’s tactile new DualSense controller, as well as an old-school, full-featured and inventive platformer in its own right,” noted our writer.

The best thing of all is it comes pre-installed on your device and it’s free. Win.

When will PS5 stock be normal?

Arguably the million-dollar question, the stock issues associated with PS5 is a tale of unprecedented demand and problems in global manufacturing owing to Covid-19.

It’s become so difficult for gamers to get their hands on the latest console, which launched in November 2020, that a huge Twitter community of PS5 stock trackers have launched.

Sony’s boss expects production of PS5 consoles to ramp up in the summer, so hopefully, bigger drops are on the horizon. For now though, we’ll have to wait for future drops.
