Fashion Designer – Ruchi Mehta

A NID graduate in textile design, Ruchi Mehta has been running her design house under the brand SALT successfully for the past three years. This designer had the creativity cells buzzing since the age of five when she began dressing her first clients – dolls! Always on the lookout for a spark to fire her imagination Ruchi draws inspiration from books, music, movies, people and nature around. The label SALT was launched in London in 2003 and the collection was chosen to be part of the Asian Dreams runway show which showcases Asian designers in the UK organised by Newham College of Further Education. The prêt -a porter show in Paris last September was the beginning of a new phase for the fashion label. She caught the interest of the buyers, fashionistas and media alike with her collection ‘Kick The Addiction’ at Lakme Fashion Week S/S 08 in Mumbai. SALT has since made a place for itself in over 150 galleries across UK including Bottega Ltd, Fenwicks and Black Orchid Ltd. With the experience of supplying to high street brands like Jigsaw in the UK, Australia and New York, the company has come of age. In India, the label is to be found at Cinnamon in Bangalore, Bungalow Eight in Mumbai, Amethyst in Chennai, the Devigarh Fort Palace in Devigarh and her studio in Delhi. Shows in India proved to be successful, confirming once and for all that a discerning buyer in any country, a global entity sans borders

“salt” by Ruchi Mehta

A subtle palette of textures with unique detailed embellishment is the hallmark of the label ‘salt’. This season, it extends from western wear to ethnic in a journey marked by experimentation with texture and colour. The serene palette of muted tones and colours matched with contrasts and sprinkled with inimitable details gives life to this Fall/Winter collection from ‘salt’. Basics like old ivory, silver, dove and coal are complimented by olive, twilight, misty blue, champagne red, ochre and sea. Kantha-like stitches combine with sparkly crewel work, coarse weaves combine with sheers, to produce varied tones and textures. Cuff and collar details are exaggerated in stark contrast to the otherwise easy and flowing shapes. From essential coats to sharp dresses to soft saris, the easy flowing collection aims to invade wardrobes everywhere. One interesting aspect of the collection was the printed leggings used in combination with chappals and short dresses.
