Adam Peaty questioned whether he still loves swimming after responding to his 100m breaststroke heartbreak by easing through his 50m heat at the Commonwealth Games.

The reigning Olympic champion and world record holder finished outside the medal positions in his favoured event, where he had not lost in eight years, in Birmingham last night as fellow countryman James Wilby took a surprise gold.

But after what he admitted was a “devastating night”, Peaty bounced back to finish joint-top in his 50m breaststroke heat alongside South African Michael Houlie.

The three-time Commonwealth champion touched the wall in 27.10 seconds to progress before revealing that he only had a couple of hours sleep following a lot of soul-searching.

English cyclist Matt Walls says he is “pretty banged up” but otherwise okay after his terrifying crash at the Commonwealth Games on Sunday.

The Olympic omnium champion received treatment for more than 40 minutes at the Lee Valley VeloPark before being taken away by ambulance, with spectators also hurt after he and his bike had come over the top of the barriers on the high banking of the corner.

Team England confirmed Walls was “alert and talking” and given immediate medical attention in hospital before the 24-year-old later confirmed he had avoided serious injury.

The 30-year-old lifted the roof off London’s velodrome with scratch race victory, a magical moment that she felt stacked up against five Olympic titles.

It did so because, as she explained in extraordinary post-race interviews, of a backdrop of a silent, existential struggle with cycling.

Such was the turmoil that her third and final race at these Games could have been her last.

She said: “Honestly, I can’t even tell you how I felt last night. I just lay there with my mum and I thought I just don’t know what to do, I don’t know whether I can even put myself through this.

“It’s just so hard. It is hard enough coming in, Olympics after Olympics and getting yourself ready, without the whole rubbish stuff of your personal life.”

Team GB can look forward to improved prospects in the 200m freestyle after England took silver, Scotland bronze and Wales finished fourth at the Commonwealth Games, says James Guy.

“I think you’re right. Generally, across the board, 200m freestyle has been quite a weak event for us. But having 12 lads here, it’s great for the future. Obviously we can’t go forever but it’s nice to see the young guys coming through and pushing us,” he said.

Tom Dean, meanwhile, was delighted he was able to haul in a silver, even if the gold proved just out of reach. “Yeah slightly too much. I gave it a good go. It was a tough double with the 100m freestyle as well. But the Aussies are such a strong team, they showed that at the Worlds. Incredible race to be a part of.”

Hours after a shock fourth-place finish in the men’s 100 metres breaststroke final at the Commonwealth Games, ending an unbeaten eight-year record in his favourite event, Peaty was back in the pool.

The 27-year-old was joint fastest in the morning heats of the 50m discipline but a semi-final time of 27.03 seconds was two hundredths of a second slower than Australia’s Sam Williamson in the evening.

Peaty is still digesting what happened on Sunday night and while he acknowledged he may have expected too much on his comeback from a broken foot, he openly questioned whether his desire remains the same.

But the triple Olympic champion and world record holder in the 50m and 100m breaststroke said: “You back a lion into a corner, they’re going to bite. I’m backed into a corner now but I’m OK with that.

“It’s just as important in an athlete’s career to have these moments. You think ‘do I want to be here? Do I love the sport as much as I did?’. I don’t know. Those questions, I have to address.”

Australia take the gold by a distance but there’s a huge fight for the other medal places and it’s left to Tom Dean to take the silver for England. Scotland and Wales have a huge battle for bronze…and Duncan Scott just does enough to land it for Scotland!

And that’s a Commonwealth record for Australia too in this event.

England swimmer Adam Peaty says he has to keep his spirits up by thinking about the bigger picture, after his comments earlier about being “not bothered” whether he won tomorrow’s 50m breaststroke final or not.

The Olympics are of course the main goal, but he’s a fierce competitor and still wants to win.

Abbie Wood took bronze in the women’s 200m medley final and says she’s looking forward to some downtime before the long race toward the Paris 2024 Olympics.

“I feel like this year has been really hard. So many ups and downs and inconsistencies with illness and just trying to get your head together again after coming fourth in an Olympic games. It’s as tough as sport gets. But to also do this in front of my parents is just as good, so I’m really happy with that,” she said to BBC Sport.

“I think I just need a proper break. I feel like I didn’t give myself that after the Olympics. So I’m going to take a month off and then the charge starts for Paris.

“If I want to have a big break it’s got to be now rather than next season. I just need to mentally reset. I’ve realised how, it’s more your brain than your body these days, for me anyway.”

Gold for England! Sarah Davies wins the women’s 71kg category after rocking a 126kg clean and jerk for a total of 229kg.

Very impressive and a Commonwealth Games record in the category with that weight total.

Top of the podium, with Canada and India taking silver and bronze respectively.

Maisie Summers-Newton took gold and Grace Harvey claimed silver in the women’s 100m breaststroke SB6 final.

The gold medallist said: “I’m really really happy. Coming off the back of the World Championships, it’s quite a tight turnaround, only five weeks. The Worlds was definitely our main goal but to come here and get the gold, it’s what I wanted to do.

“It’s a bit of a shame we didn’t get the heats this morning. That would’ve been fantastic to show the crowd what para-swimmers can do even more, but just to come out here in front of a home crowd and get a gold and silver, it’s incredible.”
