Teachers are like second parents on earth. They guide, direct and instill the love of learning in individuals. They are like a compass that activates the magnets of curiosity, knowledge, and wisdom in an individual according to Ever Garrison.
Teachers are great assets to national development because without them we wouldn’t have great politicians, educationists, technologists, health practitioners, artists, scientists, etc who are contributing to the growth of the country.
Unfortunately, teachers are not rewarded well for their impact on society and individuals.
They are like candles that light the way for others. There are no incentives from the government to encourage the teachers.
There is no conducive environment for teaching to be enjoyable. Most of these teachers do retire empty-handed without getting their pension and gratuity from the government.
There is no insurance of any kind for the teachers especially at their old age to prepare them for unforeseen occurrences in the future.
According to the report on Daily Trust, the Minister of Education revealed that the Federal Government in January 2022 will increase the salary of teachers and extend their service years from 35years to 40 years before retirement. With this current development, the teacher’s morale will be boosted in carrying out their duties effectively.
This will also create opportunities for people who have been relegating the teaching profession because of their peanut salaries to embrace it. The salary increase will enable the teachers to solve some of their family problems and save too.
The government should also create room for teachers to attend professional training, workshops, and research for further improvement in knowledge not only salary increment and extension of the service year.
Additional allowances should be added to the teacher’s salaries such as health allowance, wardrobe allowance, transport allowance, etc because they sacrifice a lot in producing the best brains in society.
They suppose to earn higher when compared to other professions.
