President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday said that the damages and more havoc from the lingering Russia-Ukraine war further justifies Nigeria’s resolute calls for a nuclear-free world.
Naija News reports that the Nigerian leader stated this on Wednesday (today) while delivering a speech at the 77th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA77) in New York.
Speaking before his counterparts forming the UNGA77 body, President Buhari said it is necessary to discourage the proliferation of nuclear weapons and universal Arms Trade Treaty.
Doing these according to him will do well in preventing global human disasters.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has been ordered to call off its nationwide industrial strike.
The varsity staff union were ordered by the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN) on Wednesday, September 21, to reopen all public universities and return to their duty posts after seven months of shutting down the learning institutions.
Naija News understands that the NICN directive was coming following a petition before the court by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, on behalf of the federal government.
Recall that students of public universities across the country have been at home since February 14, 2022, when ASUU press home its demands for improved funding for universities, and a review of salaries for lecturers, among other issues.
Despite a series of meetings, ASUU and the Federal Government could not reach a good end.
Consequently, the Federal Government went to court to challenge the strike.
The camp of Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has reportedly pulled out of the Campaign Council of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.
The Wike camp also vowed not to partake in Atiku’s campaign activities pending the resignation of the party’s National Chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu.
Naija News learned that the Wike camp made the decisions at a strategic meeting held in Port Harcourt in the early hours of Wednesday.
It was gathered that the Wike Camp decided to hold the meeting following the vote of confidence passed on Ayu as the party’s national chairman by the National Executive Committee (NEC) despite their demand for his resignation.
In a resolution read by a former PDP Deputy National Chairman, Bode George, the Wike camp insisted that its members will not work with Atiku until Ayu resigns and allow an acting Chairman from the South to lead the party.
The Red Chamber of the National Assembly on Wednesday confirmed Justice Olukayode Ariwoola as the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).
Ariwooola was confirmed at about 12:5pm after answering all the questions asked by the Senators when the Senate resorted to the Committee of the Whole.
During the exercise, the lawmakers requested that the acting CJN be asked to take a bow and go after he successfully responded to questions posed to him during screening.
Senators who asked the CJN questions included the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege; Minority Leader of the Senate, Senator Philip Aduda, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, Senator Gabriel Suswam and Senator Bala Ibn Na’Allah.
In his reaction, Senate President Ahmad Lawan ratified the decision of the lawmakers that the acting CJN be allowed to take a bow and go.
Thereafter the Senate reverted to plenary where the lawmakers also unanimously approved that the acting CJN’s nomination for appointment as CJN be confirmed by the Senate.
Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello has hinted that the activities of saboteurs in the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari are part of what is responsible for the lingering strike action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
Governor Bello however vowed that such persons whom he described as ‘Judas’ would soon be exposed.
Naija News reports he stated this on Wednesday during an interview with Arise TV while speaking on the lingering ASUU strike which commenced on February 14.
Commenting on the strike, the Governor lamented that the future of Nigerian children is what is at stake.
He however cautioned the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) not to take law into their own hands as part of efforts to see an end to the strike action.
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has reacted to the decision of some party stalwarts to pull away from his campaign.
Naija News recalls that a group of party chieftains led by the governor of Rivers state, Nyesom Wike had withdrawn participation in the presidential campaign committee of the party for the 2023 elections.
The group’s position was disclosed by a former Deputy National Chairman of the PDP, Olabode George, after hours of meeting, which started Tuesday evening and ended Wednesday morning.
Reacting to the move from the party members, Atiku said he was surprised by their withdrawal because apart from the Rivers chapter, all other states submitted names of people who they wanted in the Presidential Campaign Council.
In a statement on Wednesday, the former vice president reiterated that the national chairman of the party, Iyorchia Ayu will only be removed from his position if the law in the party allows it.
Speaking further, Atiku explained that the nation is currently going through a phase of insecurity, economic meltdown, disunity and mutual mistrust and educational dislocations which should be the point of focus for the time being.
He urged everyone in the party to come together and join him in addressing the ills in the society and turn the country around.
Atiku urged PDP members that have stated their resolve to withdraw from the Presidential Campaign Council to rethink and retrace their steps.
President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of Salihu Abdulhamid Dembos as the Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA).
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, announced the appointment in a statement in Abuja on Wednesday.
In the statement signed by the Special Assistant To The President (Media) Office of the Minister of Information and Culture on Wednesday, Segun Adeyemi, Mohammed said the appointment is for a tenure of three years in the first instance.
Until his appointment, Dembos was the Executive Director, Marketing, of the NTA.
Dembos’ career as a media professional spans over 20 years.

The Speaker of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila, while declaring the hearing open, said he was delighted to inaugurate the committee “at this critical point of our nationhood where more resources are needed to diversify our economy.”
The legal representative for the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has said it will take appropriate action after studying the ruling of the National Industrial Court, which ordered the reopening of all public universities after seven months of closure.
Naija News reports that a vacation Judge, Justice Polycarp Hamman, on Wednesday, ordered the varsity staff union to call off its nationwide industrial strike after disagreeing with ASUU’s lawyer, Femi Falana, that FG’s claim on the damage on students’ educational future was based on hearsay.
The Justice subsequently restrained the union from the industrial action pending the determination of the main case bordering on the terms of agreement between the two parties ( FG and ASUU).
Speaking to newsmen, Falana, who was represented in court by Dr. Odorche Edor, said ASUU’s legal team will adopt its next line of action after going through the ruling.
A former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has said the Muslim-Muslim ticket fielded by the All Progressives Congress for the 2023 presential election will fail.
Dogara stated that the presidential candidate of APC, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, failed to listen to the national outcry regarding the same faith ticket and also dismissed the consequences of the action.
He said this in Abuja on Tuesday at a summit tagged, ‘Meet The Church,’ organised by the Nigeria National Christian Coalition with the theme: ‘The role of the church in nation-building’.
The former speaker asserted that the adoption Muslim-Muslim ticket by the ruling party is a fruitless political effort that has been doomed to end in spectacular failure.
