Shailene Woodley and Jack Whitehall meet cute in the trailer for sci-fi rom-com Robots

Shailene Woodley and Jack Whitehall pulled double duty as they played a couple starting to fall in love — as well as their robotic doubles — in the trailer for the upcoming romantic comedy Robots.

The 31-year-old Big Little Lies star and the 34-year-old English actor play Elaine and Charles, respectively, who have a love-at-first-sight moment when they collide while at a skating rink.

But the trailer for the film — which debuts on May 19 of this year — then reveals that they live in a near future where humans have developed life-like robots to take care of most physical work.

And even though it is illegal, the two also own robots that are their exact doppelgängers, though neither Elaine nor Charles initially know that.

When Jack suffers from nerves, he sends his robotic clone out to romance Elaine in his place, except she has the same idea.

Meet cute: Shailene Woodley, 31, and Jack Whitehall, 34, play a new couple who have runaway robot doppelgängers in the trailer for the sci-fi rom-com Robots

The trailer opens with a skating rink mishap, when Charles spies Elaine and winks at her, only for her to then literally knock him off his feet.

When another woman stops to ask if he’s OK, he brushes her off and hilarious knocks her down with a little shove as he rushes to the beautiful stranger’s side.

But their moment is interrupted when a politician gives a speech revealing that humans introduced robots to take care of their toughest jobs 10 years earlier.

A human garbage worker is then seen stripping the poorly designed mask off of his fellow robot trash collector, only for two newer robots to then toss it in the truck with the rest of the refuse.

But then Charles watches a news broadcast while in the shower about a man who was sentenced to 28 years in prison for creating a robot double of himself.

The news hits him too close to home, as the camera pans to reveal that he has a robotic double of his own who is in the shower with him shaving his nether regions.

‘You hear that, robot? We need to be more careful,’ he says.

‘This new girl is… a different level,’ he says later while chatting with his robot at home.

‘I’m glad you’ve met a nice young lady,’ the robot replies in a warm yet emotion-free tone.

‘I need you completely focused on getting her horizontal for me,’ Charles says coldly before opening his bottle on the robots eye socket.

But unbeknownst to Charles, Elaine has the same idea.

‘This Charles guy really wants to bang me, so you’ll have to take over tomorrow, E2,’ she tells her robot, who is happy to comply.

Both of them then deprogram their robots so that they will act less stilted and more human-like when they’re socializing.

That leads to both C2 and E2 going on the date and having a smashing time.

‘I just don’t want the night to end,’ C2 says sweetly to his new love.

‘I feel the same way,’ she replies as they caress each other while high in the hills above Los Angeles.

Uh oh: Elaine has the same idea. 'This Charles guy really wants to bang me, so you'll have to take over tomorrow, E2,' she tells her robot, who is happy to comply

But then Charles and Elaine can’t get a hold of their robots despite frantically texting and calling them.

Meanwhile, the robots have electric sex for the first time, which makes the lights in the house flicker.

Charles and Elaine are then flummoxed when their robots each send them video messages announcing that they’re running away with each other.

Once the original couple meet up again, Elaine starts throwing objects at Charles for deceiving her with his robot, even though she did the same thing.

They start to panic about the robots stealing their lives, and they fear they’ll be found out and sent to prison for making the copies.

The only solution seems to be to track down the robots and put them out of commission.

Things get worse as the robots announce that they want to get married immediately.

In order to save themselves, the human frenemies set out with stun guns to take down their robotic clones.

They corner the couple by finding them at a motel.

As they burst in, Charles says, ‘Your disgusting joy ride is over,’ but Elaine shoots his double before he can.

‘Hey, I get to shoot me!’ he shouts, but she says she ‘couldn’t resist.’

‘Well, fine, then I’m shooting you,’ he says, but she shoots her own clone before he can.

They have more mishaps after they wrap the robots in plastic and try to throw them off a cliff into a river, only for them to start swimming away.

The trailer ends on a humorous scene as Elaine and Charles confront her double, who has gone ‘feral’ from being deprogrammed and tries to aggressively solicit sex from him.

Robots will hit theaters on May 19, 2023.
