Grand National tips: Gordon Elliott can win for a FOURTH time… but not with the horse you think

ONLY one trainer has won the Grand National more than once since 2000.

Among a host of big names including Willie Mullins, Paul Nicholls and Henry de Bromhead, this man stands out above all the others: Gordon Elliott.

Galvin looks a natural over big fences, is proven over long trips and could have drying conditions in his favour in the Grand National

Put simply, the man is a genius at getting runners ready for the most gruelling tests in racing.

His domination of the Cross Country Chase at Cheltenham Festival a case in point.

But three Grand National wins since 2007 – once with Silver Birch and two with Tiger Roll – shows he, above all others, can get the job done.

OK, he had the horse of a lifetime in Tiger Roll – a Triumph Hurdle winner who by some grace of God somehow stayed more than four miles too.

But there is no denying he knows what he is doing – and the argument can be made he has plotted out a path to glory with Galvin this year.

Galvin battled out a thriller with Delta Work in the Cross Country at Cheltenham, leading narrowly just after the last.

Ultimately, Delta Work’s preference for the soft conditions paid off and he powered on up the hill to win by two-and-a-half lengths.

Galvin, who is nine, raced off level weights with ten-year-old Delta Work that day.

He must concede half a stone at Aintree but there’s a strong chance the ground will be a good deal drier on Saturday.

Will it prove 7lbs difference is tough to tell… but Galvin won the 2021 Savills Chase on yielding ground and both his wins in a Punchestown Grade 3 over three miles have come on good going.

He didn’t travel well when defending his Savills crown and finished 15 lengths behind subsequent Ryanair winner Envoi Allen last November.

But Elliott is certain Galvin will come on leaps and bounds from his Cheltenham exertions.

Delta Work was third in the National last year and there’s every chance he can run a solid race again.

But it could be we know all about him over the Aintree fences.

Galvin has never run at Aintree, his slight jumping left shouldn’t be a problem at all and he is more of an unknown quantity, definitely open to improvement.

He is a proven Grade 1 winner with a touch of class pitched into a Grade 3.

The weight he has to carry might put some off, but at 20-1 and with some firms paying six places already, that looks a fair price.
