Biden speech live today: President to say US must turn ‘peril into possibility’ in joint address to Congress

Mask guidance ‘great reason’ to get vaccine, says Biden.mp4

Joe Biden will tonight give his first major speech to Congress, focusing on American families, a tax rise for the rich and the coronavirus rescue plan.

The prime-time address, which is scheduled for 9pm ET (12am GMT), will be historic because it will be the first joint Congress address delivered by a president standing in front of two women. Vice president Kamala Harris and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will be sat in the two chairs behind him.

The bulk of Mr Biden’s remarks will concern the American Families Plan, with more details about it to be released ahead of the speech.

Under the initiative, the Biden administration will reportedly use money generated by an increase in capital gains tax to fund childcare costs and make pre-school free for all Americans.

The president’s address will also touch on coronavirus, police reform, immigration and gun safety, according to White House press secretary Jen Psaki.

A new CNN poll that was conducted by SSRS a few days before Joe Biden’s 100th day as president has found that 53 per cent of Americans approve of his handling of the position and say he has had the right priorities so far.

The poll also found that 59 per cent said that Mr Biden is doing a good job keeping his campaign promises, as 66 per cent approve of his handling of the coronavirus pandemic. That figure is up 6 per cent since early March.

McClatchy also reported on Wednesday that Republicans are struggling for lines to attack Mr Biden with, as he is labelled: “bland”.

Robert Blizzard, a Republican pollster, told the outlet: “He’s very difficult to pin down one negative thing on him,” adding: “That is an ongoing challenge for Republicans.”

Meanwhile, federal investigators executed a search warrant at the Manhattan based apartment of Rudy Giuliani, the former personal lawyer of Donald Trump and ex-mayor of New York City.

The New York Times reported that the search was executed on Wednesday as part of a criminal investigation into Mr Giuliani’s dealings in Ukraine.

According to the publication, investigators seized several electronic devices during the raid.

More details on the federal raid of Rudy Giuliani’s NYC apartment over Ukraine dealings

According to the publication, investigators seized several electronic devices during the raid.

The Independent has contacted the Manhattan US Attorney’s office for a comment.

Mr Giuliani’s lawyer Bob Costello called the raid “totally unnecessary” and said it was only for “bad publicity” to “make him [Rudy] look like he’s some sort of criminal.” according to Fox News.

The search warrant suggests that federal authorities were further pursuing their investigation into whether Mr Giuliani, who previously served as New York City’s mayor, illegally lobbied the Trump administration on behalf of Ukranian officials and oligarchs in 2019 ahead of the 2020 election. Danielle Zoellner has the scoop on this one here.

Donald Trump blasts Liz Cheney’s polling as ‘sooo low’ calling her a ‘warmongering fool’

The main event in DC politics will be Joe Biden’s address to a joint session of Congress, but as ever, there’s no shortage of Donald Trump insults making their way around the capitol

Donald Trump has continued his targeted criticism of Wyoming representative Liz Cheney, saying she is looking for a “way out” of her Congressional race after she refused to rule out a 2024 presidential run this week.

In a statement released by his leadership political action committee, Save America, the former president once again lashed out at the representative, who voted to impeach Mr Trump in January.

“Liz Cheney is polling sooo low in Wyoming, and has sooo little support, even from the Wyoming Republican Party, that she is looking for a way out of her Congressional race,” Mr Trump said in a statement on Tuesday.

Louise Hall is following this intra-party spat.

Biden is going to have some competition: MAGA rallies 2.0

He may not be president anymore, but Donald Trump is reportedly considering still acting like it, hatching plans to head back out onto the road to once again to hold his signature MAGA rallies.

Sources close to the former president told CNN that Mr Trump has been tossing the idea around, and could return to holding live MAGA events as soon as May – just after Joe Biden’s first 100 days in office have ended.

“It will definitely be different in terms of the setup, but we got really good at planning these events in 2020, so we will probably use a lot of those same vendors again,” CNN’s source said.
