The steps and requirements for getting a visa to enter Australia haven’t changed at all since the beginning. This is because Nigerian people are still waiting for more information about the Australia Visa.
This time, I went through the process of applying for an Australian visa with the group. Unlike most people, I didn’t use a travel agent. Even though the process is easy, the document and form are quite long. This is something I wrote for tourism (subclass 600), not for school.
You can apply by coming in person or sending it in online (no need to come). I’ve used both of these methods, and I’ll explain how to apply for an Australian visa below.
Getting a visa is one of the first things you have to do when you want to visit a country. The visa or visa is a permission from the country you’re going to that lets you enter and stay there for a short time. That is, you can’t study or work in a country where you don’t have citizenship if you don’t have a visa.
So, you will need the visa for Australia to get into Australia. But there isn’t just one kind of visa. There are different kinds, and you’ll have to ask for the one that best fits your goals in the country. The problem is that not all applications are approved by the immigration department. The difficulty of getting a visa will depend on your personal situation, the bilateral agreements between your country and Australia, and other temporary factors like the number of applications they have at a certain time.
Next in this guide, we’ll look at the different kinds of Australian visas, the requirements for each, and what each one lets you do. It can help you get your visa for Australia if you understand it well.
What visa do I need for Australia?
Before applying for a visa you must consider some aspects that could determine what type of visa you need. This is a list of some of the most common conditions:
- Purpose of your stay: travel, study, work, visit a family member …
- Time you want to stay in the country: short, medium or long term.
- If you will go alone or in company
- Age
- nationality
- Training level and work experience
- English level
- Economic solvency
Depending on your purposes and these conditions mentioned, you have three major types of visas for Australia :
- Tourist visa or visit
- Study visa
- Work visa (temporary or permanent)
Australia Visa Requirements
Documents needed to make an Australian visa are:
- Print and fill in the visa application form ( Form 1419 )
- 3.5 x 4.5 cm white background photo
- Copy of Passport
- Copy of Birth Certificate, KK
- Copy of the last 3 months savings account or salary slip
- Itinerary while in Australia or booking flight and hotel proof
- (optional) Fill in form 956a if the application will be submitted by someone else
- (optional) Fill in form 1229 if for children under 17 years
- Visa fee
Form 1419 is indeed quite a lot of pages, you need time and accuracy to fill it. Who ever filled out the English Visa Form, well, it was similar. Don’t be afraid if someone is hesitant to fill it, you just leave it blank, especially in the section on how to pay for the visa, then the VFS officer will help you when you arrive.

Submission of an Australian Walk-In Visa
You can apply for a visa by mail (e.g., by filling out form 956) or you can come in person. Before, you had to make your first appointment through the VFS website. Once you had a new date and time for your appointment, you could go to the VFS Nigeria office. Each person who wants to apply must get an appointment, so if there are four people in a family, there must be four appointments.
So as not to be discouraged, you should submit a visa application 1-2 months before departure.
If you only want to apply for Transit Visa (Subclass 771), it cannot be served via VFS again. You must fill in and submit online, it costs free, via ImmiAccount. The method is similar to the method I described below.
During the submission process, we still have to bring the original passport with us, but we can go home right away. The visa will be in the form of an electronic visa that will be sent to us by e-mail. We just need to print it in case the airlines ask for it at check-in.
The way to wait in line depends on how many people are there, but you can expect to be served after an hour. There isn’t much of an interview process here; only documents are looked over. VFS Global Officers will check to see if our documents have everything they need. Just pay, and we’ll get a reference number if you can pass the document administration process. With this number, we can check online to see where our application is at.
Without checking the status of the application at any time, if we fill in the e-mail address on the visa form, then we can e-mail the approved visa information faster with the e-visa attachment.
The length of time it takes for a visa to be approved varies. The last time I got a visa, I got an exit visa two working days after I sent in my application. But I have friends who just got approval after about 10 working days, even though they were going to the same place and leaving on the same day. The only difference was the day they sent in their application document.
Depending on your luck (or the dates on your documents), you can get a single-entry or multiple-entry visa that is good for 3 years. Heard that people who apply for a visa with a sponsor letter (from relatives with permanent resident status in Australia) have a better chance of getting more than one entry.

Nigerians can apply for an Australian visa online or through the Internet. You can use this online method to apply for both a Visit Visa (Tourism) and an Australian Transit Visa (subclass 771).
Please start here to find out more about what is needed and how to send it in. Basically, all of the documents I listed above, including photos and other documents, must be prepared as a scan or file (PDF or JPG), except for form 1419, which will be filled out online.
Next, I explain the step-step for filling out the form online. You need a laptop / PC for this matter, spare about 30-45 minutes per applicant, and of course the internet connection must be constant.
- Form filling online starts with how to create an account login at ImmiAccount . After the account is successfully created, there will be a verification email that you must click before you can proceed. 1 Account can apply for multiple person visa.
- Log in to ImmiAccount, click New Application , then select Visitor Visa (600).
- Enter your location (Nigeria), and the reason for filling out a visa (Tourism, Study, etc.)
- Fill in the personal data as usual, continue to fill until the Upload step
- Notice that in the upload section there are “Required” and “Recommended”. Make sure all the Required documents are uploaded (Passport, KTP, Foto, Itinerary, Employment, Family, Financial), including the Evidence of Previous Travel (scan all passport pages).
- After finishing, click the “Submit Application” button
- The status will change to “Received” and you will get an email “IMMI Acknowledgment of Application Received”
You don’t have to check the website every day to see what’s going on because you’ll get an email if the submission is done or if you need to send more documents. If the application is approved, we will get an email with a PDF Visa Grant Notice that we don’t need to print. When I applied for this visa online, it was processed quickly, in just two working days. However, it usually takes between five and ten working days to get a visa.
Can I have more than one visa?
No. In Australia, you can never have more than one visa. So, if your status in the country changes and you switch from one type of visa to another, the first one will be canceled as soon as the second one starts.
What happens if I find myself in an irregular situation within Australia?
If your visa has run out or you don’t have one, you can’t be in Australia. If this happens, you will be in an unusual situation, and the government could deport you or punish you.
Australia’s Department of Immigration and Border Protection keeps a close eye on everyone who comes into and leaves the country. Make sure your visa is in order, and if you need to renew it, do it on time to avoid problems.
