Amy Schumer got death threats after Oscars seat filler joke with Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons

Amy Schumer revealed on Wednesday that one of her jokes from the 2022 Oscars resulted in death threats so severe the Secret Service had to get involved.

The comedian, 40, spoke with Howard Stern, 68, on his SiriusXM show and said that her seat filler joke with Kirsten Dunst, 39, and Jesse Plemons, 34, drew much ire from those who thought she ‘disrespected’ Dunst.

The actress said the death threats she received ‘were so bad the Secret Service reached out to me about that bit. I was like, “I think you have the wrong number. It’s Amy, not Will,”‘ adding, ‘The misogyny is unbelievable.’

Schumer also said that the Los Angeles Police Department contacted her about the threats.

During the bit, which was pre-planned and had Dunst’s blessing, Schumer mistook the Oscar-nominated actress for a seat filler and kicked her out of her seat, then continued to chat with Plemons.

The Life & Beth star tried to calm down upset fans the day after the Oscars, stating, ‘Hey I appreciate the love for Kirsten Dunst. I love her too! Wouldn’t disrespect that queen like that.’

Elsewhere in the conversation Schumer touched on the Will Smith, 53, controversy. She told Stern that though Smith’s on-stage assault of comedian Chris Rock, 57, ‘was shocking’ and ‘a bummer’ she wouldn’t have thrown him out of the ceremony: ‘I didn’t have that feeling.’

The star also maintained that the ordeal was traumatic: ‘People made fun of me for saying it was traumatizing. I don’t think it was traumatizing for me. I think it was traumatizing for all of us.’

The star – who co-hosted the show with Regina Hall and Wanda Sykes – also admitted that she felt sympathy for the King Richard actor, who slapped Rock after the comedian made a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith‘s, 50, hair.

‘I just thought, “Oh my God Will Smith”… I was in an abusive relationship years ago… I thought right away, “Oh my God, Will Smith must be in so much pain.” I felt bad for him too. That’s probably not the right instinct.’

‘To see your friend get hit and, also Will Smith, who we’ve all loved forever… I haven’t been around much violence, it was upsetting for so many reasons… it was shocking and it was a bummer,’ she said, adding that as a performer it was a ‘nightmare’ to have that video out there.

Smith has since received a 10-year ban from attending the Academy Awards and has officially resigned from the Academy.

Schumer revealed that she saw Rock right after the slap and they’ve texted ‘a little bit’ since then.

When asked how Rock should have handled the situation, she said, ‘He knows what he’s doing. I have a bad poker face and I need to share what’s on my mind in a compulsive way. But I think he’s really smart.’

‘He’s not really addressing it. He hasn’t spoken publicly about it so I shouldn’t speak for him. He’s a pro, he’s a sweetheart,’ she said.

In a previous post shared to her Instagram account after the shocking altercation took place, Schumer shared that she was ‘Still triggered and traumatized.’

‘I love my friend @chrisrock and believe he handled it like a pro. Stayed up there and gave an Oscar to his friend @questlove and the whole thing was so disturbing.’

Turning her attention to Smith, Schumer said that she saw ‘so much pain’ in the actor, adding that she has been left with a ‘sickening feeling’ that has yet to subside.

‘So much pain in @willsmith anyway I’m still in shock and stunned and sad,’ she continued. ‘I’m proud of myself and my cohosts. But yeah. Waiting for this sickening feeling to go away from what we all witnessed.’

Outfit change: Schumer later traded in her green top for a long-sleeve grey shirt and black sunglasses, as she continued filming
