Victor Osimhen’s record-breaking feats highlight Super Eagles’ hammering of Sao Tome & Principe

Jose Pereiro’s men were in a crushing mood as they blasted ten goals past the Falcons and True Patriots on Monday

Napoli forward Victor Osimhen was the star of the show as the youngster scored four times and assisted another two to power Nigeria to a 10-0 win over Sao Tome and Principe at the Stade d’Agadir on Monday afternoon.

It is the Super Eagles’ record biggest-ever victory and Sao Tome and Principe’s second-worst defeat after their 11-0 hammering in the hands of Congo on July 7, 1976.

Osimhen headed home the opener after just nine minutes, scored the first goal of the second half, and added two more in the 65th and 84th minutes to complete his most accomplished performance in a Super Eagles shirt.

Africa’s most expensive striker now boasts an astonishing 15 goals and eight assists in only 22 appearances for the three-time Africa champions.

The 23-year-old is also the fastest player to reach 15 goals for the senior national team.

When he blasted home his third goal shortly after the hour mark, Osimhen became the first Super Eagles player to net a hat-trick since Odion Ighalo in 2018 and Nnamdi Oduamadi in 2013. Osimhen is the eighth overall Nigerian international to bag a hat-trick.

And when he registered his fourth of the afternoon, the former Lille lad became only the third player to score four goals for the Nigerian national team, following the footsteps of Elkanah Onyeali against Dahomey in 1959 and Rashidi Yekini versus Burkina Faso in 1991.

At 0.68, Osimhen now has the best goal-to-game ratio in Nigerian football history, better than that of the country’s greatest ever striker Rashidi Yekini (0.63).

Sitting above the legendary Austin Okocha and Julius Aghahowa and just behind Odion Ighalo and Ahmed Musa (16 goals apiece), Osimhen is now the ninth all-time top scorer of the Super Eagles.

After netting the winner against Sierra Leone on Friday, the Napoli striker is currently the top scorer for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers with five goals.
