Two reasons Tottenham and Newcastle should revive reported interest in Porto’s Super Eagles star
Porto star Zaidu Sanusi is arguably Nigeria’s most decorated player this season. An incredible footballer who has improved in leaps and bounds since his days at Jega United.
The left-back won the double – Primeira Liga and Taça de Portugal during the recently concluded season.
The modern game has evolved very much, as well as the roles carried out by the players on the pitch.
Nowadays, the full-back is a more refined position and what was expected of them in the last decade is now obsolete.
Gone are the days when fullbacks were expected to be an extension of the centre-backs, modern teams now have a structure which needs the fullbacks to act as wide outlets and creative forces.
It is incredibly rare to see full-backs in the mould of Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold, Paris St Germain’s Achraf Hakimi and Manchester City’s João Cancelo.
However, there are still other refined fullbacks who are capable of doing the basics right and also adding a few more strings to their bow as time goes on.
Sanusi falls into this category. Although he has been linked with moves to Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur, the speculation has gone cold in recent weeks.
This article will be taking a look at two reasons why both English clubs should revive their interest in signing the Nigerian left-back.
Pace and power
Fullbacks have refined their bodies over the years. The era in which upper body strength was the main focus has now disappeared.
Focus has now shifted to a combination of pace and power which is incredibly important when full-backs shuttle up and down the flanks.
It would be surprising if you see players like Andy Robertson and Achraf Hakimi without pace right?
Thankfully, Zaidu Sanusi possesses this attribute to a respectable level.
He is quite able to get along the flanks real quick and is powerful enough to fend off opponents in a duel.
Technical security
Being comfortable on the ball for longer than four seconds under pressure is a rare attribute despite how easy it sounds.
Sanusi possesses this attribute and it serves him well. This is why he is not easily dispossessed.
The aforementioned attributes possessed by Sanusi can help him flourish at Newcastle or Tottenham.
Even if he makes the move to other clubs rather than the aforementioned , the odds of doing well are high.
He is a huge prospect and I think Newcastle and Tottenham executives should be having him on their lists of transfer targets for the summer.
