Osimhen scores first career hat-trick on weekend of what would have been Maradona’s 62nd birthday
Super Eagles star Victor Osimhen continued his goalscoring streak as Napoli cruised to a 4-0 win over Sassuolo Calcio in a Serie A matchday 12 encounter played at the Diego Armando Maradona stadium in Naples.
Osimhen bagged his first Serie A and career hat-trick in the empathic win, extending his goal scoring streak to four games.
His hat-trick was scored on the weekend of what would have been Napoli legend Diego Maradona’s 62nd birthday.
Osimhen opened the scoring for the hosts as early as the fourth minute after combining with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.
Fifteen minutes later, the lanky forward extended Napoli’s lead to two following a well drilled pass by Kvaratskhelia.
Nine minutes to the end of the first half, in-form Georgia star Kvaratskhelia got his name on the score sheet following his combination with Mario Rui.
Napoli resumed the second half where they left off, with the home side dominating the game.
In the 77th minute, Osimhen put the ball into the net to record his first Serie A hat-trick and secure a 4-0 win for Luciano Spalletti,
Osimhen has now scored seven goals and assisted one in eight Italian topflight games this season.
With the seven goals scored, the Lagos-born forward is now the joint top scorer in the Serie A this term alongside Marko Arnautovic of Bologna.
In the provisional standings, Luciano Spalleti’s men remain in first place with 32 points and are the only Italian club undefeated in domestic and European competitions this season.
Up next for Osimhen and his teammates is a trip to Anfield where they will take on Liverpool in the matchday six of the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday.
