Oscars 2021 Worst Dressed: Andra Day wears buttock-baring gown on red carpet
The Oscars are always one of the most hotly-anticipated celebrity events of the year – and despite this year’s ceremony looking very different amid the COVID-19 pandemic, that didn’t stop the stars from pulling out all the sartorial stops on the red carpet, with plenty of style hits, and a slew of style fails.
Several celebrity guests at the 93rd annual Academy Awards missed the mark entirely with their choice of outfit – particularly Best Actress nominee Andra Day, who opted for a barely-there buttock-baring gold number that looked more suited to a beach club than an elegant red carpet event.
The shimmering metallic number featured a tiny crop top and floor-length skirt that had a split right up to her bottom, meaning the talented starlet ended up flashing far more flesh than is appropriate for such an esteemed ceremony.
But the 36-year-old was by no means the only celebrity whose fashion choice flopped at this year’s awards.
Oh dear: Best Actress nominee Andra Day landed herself at the top of the worst-dressed list at this year’s Oscars, thanks to her barely-there gold dress, which looked better suited to a beach club than a glittering red carpet
Garish: The talented 36-year-old, who is nominated for her role in The United States Vs. Billie Holiday, completely missed the mark in the tacky ensemble
Baring it all: The metallic material was also incredibly sheer, allowing Andra to show off her toned legs
Take care! Thankfully the dress was perfectly fitted to the singer and actress’ body, ensuring that she managed to avoid any fashion mishaps on the red carpet
Oscar-winner Laura Dern became quick fodder for social media memes with her voluminous feather dress, which was compared by many to singer Bjork’s iconic swan dress, which she wore to the 73rd Academy Awards, 20 years ago.
‘Going to tell my kids this was Laura Dern at the 2021 Oscars,’ one person wrote, while sharing an image of Bjork.
‘It took 20 years for the fashion to get it,’ another added.
Another Twitter user also remarked that Laura, 54, looked like a fluffy cat, while another joked that she was ‘serving high school Beauty and the Beast cast B’ vibes.
Joining them on the worst-dressed list was Romanian screenwriter Bianca Oana, who also chose gold for her outfit.
Instead of a dress, Bianca wore a long sleeveless blazer, paired with a matching floor-length skirt, and a black lacy camisole. She accessorized with a simple black clutch, statement earrings, and pointed-toe heels.
Womp womp: Laura Dern’s feather dress was the subject of much discussion on social media – for all the wrong reasons
Strike a pose: The feather gown appeared to shed a few pieces as Laura made her way down the carpet
Joker: The 54-year-old’s dress was mocked in several memes, with many social media users comparing her gown to Bjork’s iconic swan dress
Spot the difference? Bjork wore the swan dress to the 73rd annual Academy Awards 20 years ago, and many felt that Laura was putting a slightly stylish spin on it
Comparisons: Others joked that she looked like a fluffy cat, and was ‘serving high school Beauty and the Beast cast B’ vibes
But while the silhouette of her look was perfectly flattering, the black-and-gold striped detailing on the material made the outfit almost painful to look at – while the bizarre metal embellishments on either side of the jacket made it look as though she had accidentally left a pair of tailor’s bulldog clips attached to it.
Film producer Kori Rae could have made quite the splash in her Oscars suit – however instead of sticking with a classic style, she instead chose a pink-and-white ombre number that looked as though it had accidentally been run through the washing machine with a fuchsia sock.
She then paired it with some studded loafers that jarred with the rest of the ensemble and gave the whole look a very awkward feel.
There were a number of very odd footwear and accessory choices on the red carpet at this year’s Oscars; singer Celeste Waite paired her very gothic red-and-black dress with a diamante clutch that was shaped like a human heart, complete with arteries and valves.
Screenwriter Erica Rivinoja also chose a very quirky clutch for the evening, carrying an acrylic design that was shaped like a giant shrimp, while makeup artist Eryn Krueger Mekash had a glittering popcorn bag slung over her arm when she hit the red carpet.
Swedish songwriter Fat Max Gsus, who attended a screening of the Oscars in Stockholm, wore a very dramatic ensemble that very closely resembled a Count Dracula Halloween costume – and he accessorized his very odd look with a brooch that looked just like a beetle for added eeriness.
Laundry mishap? Producer Kori Rae’s pink ombre suit looked as though it had accidentally been thrown into the wash with a bright pink sock
Reese Witherspoon called… Danish screenwriter Elvira Lind looked as though she was auditioning for the next Legally Blonde sequel in her black, white, and pink ensemble
Optical illusion: Romanian screenwriter Bianca Oana also chose gold for her Oscars ensemble, which was something of an eyesore – and looked as though she had bulldog clips stuck under her armpits
DJ Questlove eschewed traditional black shoes in favor of some very garish gold Crocs, which he paired with an all-black ensemble to make sure that they stood out even more.
He also chose to wear the rubber clogs with some blue-and-purple socks, which made them clash even more with his outfit for the night.
Gold was one of the big tones of the night and was everywhere to be seen – from the glittering metal of the Oscars statues themselves to the many metallic hues being shown off on the red carpet.
But while some – like Carey Mulligan and Paulina Porizkova – knocked it out of the park with their glittering gold dresses, others were not quite so sartorially successful.
Producer Dana Murray, who won the Academy Awards for best Animated Feature for Soul, wore a white-and-gold dress that had a very odd and unflattering silhouette.
While the bodice of the gown was perfectly fitted to her figure, the skirt puffed straight out at the sides, making her look as though her hips were twice as wife as her body.
Ladies in red: Celeste Waite’s very gothic red-and-black dress was bad enough by itself, but when paired with her heart-shaped handbag, it looked all the more creepy, while Ashley Fox’s scarlet frock was rather unflattering
Gory: The diamante heart-shaped bag even featured arteries and valves
Put it down! Screenwriter Erica Rivinoja chose a beautiful pink dress – but for some reason chose to accessorize with a clutch that was shaped like a shrimp
Delicious? The plastic pearlescent handbag was designed to look like seafood
Gothic: Makeup artist Eryn Krueger Mekash’s black dress made her look somewhat like she was trying to dress up as Morticia Addams, and the addition of the popcorn-shaped handbag gave the overall ensemble a very tacky feel
Whoops: Film producer Dana Murray’s gold plaid dress had a very strange silhouette that did little to flatter her figure
Don’t look down! The majority of Questlove’s outfit was incredibly low-key and refined – but for some reason he chose to add a pair of gilded Crocs, which totally ruined the overall look
Why? The songwriter paired the gold plastic clogs with a pair of blue-and-purple socks
Step aside Count Dracula: Swedish songwriter Fat Max Gsus, who attended a screening of the Oscars in Stockholm, wore a very dramatic ensemble that included a beetle-shaped brooch
