Beneficiaries of NPower took to the streets to protest against non-payment
It is very unfortunate that some of the beneficiaries of Npower Batch C have not been paid the two monthly allowances yet.
Therefore, to express their displeasure and protest, some beneficiaries along with their family members demonstrated against the non-payment of two month’s allowance yesterday
The protesters, holding placards with various slogans, complained about the federal government’s non-payment of monthly allowances for the months of July and August.
They are also appealing to the federal government through the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Hajiya Sadia Omar Farooq, to extend the program for at least two years, as is the case for Batch A and Batch B beneficiaries.
The Npower scheme has often been in the news for not paying stipends to beneficiaries for the past two years due to lack of funds. The Federal Government has also reduced the duration of the scheme from two years to one year.
Npower was founded in June 2016 to fight unemployment and promote social development.
The program is designed as part of the National Social Investment Program (NSIP) for unemployed graduate and post-graduate students aged 18-35 to provide a framework for the comprehensive and relevant acquisition and skills development.
While Npower aims to ensure that each participant learns and practices as much as they need to find or create a job, all beneficiaries receive a monthly stipend ranging from N10,000 to 40,000 Naira.
Unfortunately, problems of late payment or non-payment of the monthly stipend characterize the improvement program.
In December 2021, hundreds of Npower beneficiaries in Abuja protested three months of unpaid allowances.
Michelle Bright, one of the protesters, said she has not yet received her monthly allowance, a situation that has left many hungry and ill.
“We’ve been starving for months and can’t take it anymore. That’s why we protested today. Something needs to be done urgently,” he concluded.
