Retired Golden Globes awards

Some awards at the Golden Globes have been retired, but were previously awarded in the past.

Those awards include:

• Best Documentary – Awarded from 1972 to 1976
• Best English-Language Foreign Motion Picture – Awarded from 1957 to 1973
• New Star of the Year – Actor – Awarded from 1948 to 1983
• New Star of the Year – Actress – Awarded from 1948 to 1983
• Henrietta Award (World Film Favorite – Female) – Awarded from 1950 to 1979
• Henrietta Award (World Film Favorite – Male) – Awarded from 1950 to 1979
• Promoting International Understanding – Awarded from 1945 to 1964
• Best Cinematography – Motion Picture – Awarded from 1948 to 1953, in 1955 and in 1963.

‘Not even a ceremony’

Ricky Gervais, 60, who hosted five of the awards in ten years, says he thinks it could even be the last time we see Sunday’s event.

In an exclusive interview with The Sun, he said: “They’re trying to get through this and start again. I don’t think anyone’s even been invited. It’s not even a ceremony.

“You can’t predict anything in this world. They could come back stronger than ever and be loved again or it could be the last one.

“You never know. I don’t take any-thing for granted any more. I just keep plodding on. And whatever happens, happens.”

Diversity scandal

The HFPA came under fire after a Los Angeles Times investigation revealed in February ethical lapses and a stunning lack of diversity — there was not a single Black journalist in the 87-person group.

Studios and PR firms threatened to boycott. Tom Cruise even returned his three Golden Globes, while other A-listers condemned the group on social media.

Who announced the winners?

The HFPA enlisted leaders of the groups it has given grants to to announce the winners.

Were the winners present?

None of the winners appeared to be present at the event on Sunday, nor did they immediately comment on their awards.

TV winners

Television winners included: Jean Smart for “Hacks,” which also won best television comedy, Jason Sudeikis for “Ted Lasso,” Sarah Snook and Jeremy Strong for “Succession,” Kate Winslet for “Mare of Easttown,” O Yeong-su for “Squid Game” and Michael Keaton for “Dopesick.” Barry Jenkins’ “The Underground Railroad” got best limited series.

The group said on its website that “Pose” star Michaela Jaé Rodriguez became the first trans person to win a Golden Globe.

Winners in movies

Film winners included Will Smith for “King Richard,” Kodi Smit-McPhee for “The Power of the Dog,” and Andrew Garfield for “tick, tick…BOOM!”

The Japanese film “Drive My Car,” also a critics’ group darling, got best non-English language motion picture, while “Encanto” won for animation.

West Side Story had a big night

Steven Spielbeg’s “West Side Story” won several big awards, for best picture comedy or musical, best actress for Rachel Zegler and best supporting actess for Ariana DeBose.

Awards were blogged

The Golden Globe Awards, Hollywood’s so-called biggest party that regularly drew 18 million television viewers, was reduced to a live-blog Sunday night for its 79th edition.

The embattled Hollywood Foreign Press Association proceeded with its film awards Sunday night without a telecast, nominees, a red carpet, a host, press or even a livestream.

Instead, members of the HFPA and some recipients of the group’s philanthropic grants gathered at the Beverly Hilton Hotel for a 90-minute private event, announcing the names of the film and television winners on the organization’s social media feeds.

Why the Golden Globes weren’t televised, continued

Deadline reported that the decision not to broadcast an online version of the Globes has nothing to do with the HFPA’s multimillion-dollar, multi-year deal with NBC.

According to a source at the Comcast-owned network, NBC is not blocking the HFPA’s livestream.

NBC decided to pull the plug on the show due to lack of diversity by the HFPA.

HFPA president Helen Hoehne told The Hollywood Reporter: “Change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right.”

Why the Golden Globes weren’t televised

Unfortunately, this year, the Golden Globe Awards were not available for viewing on television or streaming services.

“This year’s event is going to be a private event and will not be live-streamed,” an HFPA spokesperson told Deadline.

The HFPA continued: “We will be providing real-time updates on winners on the Golden Globes website and our social media.”

Fans of the tick…tick…BOOM! actor celebrated his win for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy.

It’s the first Golden Globe for Garfield.
