Eddy Oboh is a Nollywood actor, scriptwriter and filmmaker. He is a graduate of Electrical/Electronic Engineering from Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma. The Edo State-born actor and entrepreneur who engaged in acting since 2018 has since not looked back. He has featured in over 50 movies and TV soaps, includingThe incident, House 69, Tinsel, Super story, Dangerous love,Loving in pain, The chameleon, No wrong choice, Dorothyand Restless. In this interview with IJEOMA THOMAS-ODIA, he shares his passion for acting.

Share with us your growing up and how it informed your decision to go into Nollywood.
My early years in Eastern Nigeria, from Enugu Ezike to Onitsha, shaped my dream of becoming an actor. I was born into a family of eight in Enugu Ezike but spent my formative years in Onitsha, Anambra State. I discovered my love for storytelling and cinema, and in university, I began crafting scripts. I will travel to Onitsha, from Ekpoma, meeting with movie marketers to sell my stories. While many promises were made, they often faded away. Undeterred, I left Nigeria briefly, only to return more determined than ever. My unwavering passion for acting fueled my journey into Nollywood, where I now pursue my dream.

How are you able to hone your skills?
As a Nollywood actor, I continuously refine my craft through a multi-faceted approach. This involves ongoing training and participation in acting classes and workshops to enhance my techniques, character development, and emotional range. I analyse scripts deeply to understand the nuances of the characters I portray. Observing the performances of experienced actors, both locally and globally, provides valuable lessons. Rehearsing scenes and dialogues with fellow actors is crucial for refining on-set interactions. I actively seek feedback from directors, peers, and coaches to identify areas for improvement. Challenging myself with diverse roles expands my acting range. Staying informed about industry trends and emerging talents in Nollywood is a priority. Above all, my unwavering passion and dedication to acting inspire continuous improvement and the delivery of captivating performances.

Social media is a key part of evolution that you utilise efficiently. How much impact would you say it has had on your career?
Social media has had a significant impact on my career as a Nollywood actor. It provides a platform to connect with fans, promote my work, and engage with industry professionals. It has expanded my reach and allowed me to showcase my talent, ultimately contributing to my visibility and success in the industry.

Share with us the challenges you have faced in the industry?
In Nollywood, I’ve faced formidable challenges, notably intense competition for roles and limited opportunities in a vast talent pool. Income stability is an issue, as the industry can yield inconsistent earnings. Typecasting can also restrict the chance to diversify roles. Furthermore, rampant piracy hampers both revenue and recognition. Subpar working conditions on certain sets pose challenges as well. Nevertheless, my unwavering passion and determination fuel my commitment to overcome these obstacles and continue pursuing a successful acting career in Nollywood.

What movie/ project is Eddy currently working on?
I’m currently engaged in multiple exciting projects. On set with renowned director, Teco Benson, filming “Rainbow of Lies.” Following that, I’ll be part of a Netflix feature film, “Amatekun.” Then, will work on “Double Standard” produced by Divine Touch, and so many others.
In your opinion, what should Nollywood leverage on to constantly grow and stay abreast?
To ensure constant growth and stay abreast of global cinema, Nollywood should leverage on quality production, storytelling innovation, collaborations to foster partnerships with filmmakers and actors from around the world. Film festivals help showcase Nollywood’s talent and gain international recognition. With digital distribution, professionalism, training, development and market research, Nollywood will remain a dynamic force in the global film industry.

How receptive is the industry to beginners and what is your take on skitmakers who are gradually titling towards the industry?
Nollywood is generally receptive to beginners, and it has a history of welcoming new talents, including actors, directors, and writers. The industry thrives on fresh faces and innovative ideas. Skitmakers transitioning to the industry can bring a unique perspective and a strong online following, which can be beneficial for both parties. This trend can be seen as a positive evolution, blending traditional filmmaking with the digital age. It’s important for skitmakers to adapt to the longer format of feature films while preserving their creative essence. Ultimately, their transition can contribute to the industry’s growth and diversification.

What career path would you have taken if not acting?
I already have a multifaceted career beyond acting. Music would have been number one but I am currently not doing it professionally. I am also an entrepreneur and currently the CEO of Etexglobal Realties Ltd., a real estate company based in Lagos. I am a philanthropist and an IT specialist.

What does fashion mean to you?
Fashion, to me, is a means of self-expression and creativity. It’s a way to convey one’s personality, mood, and style through clothing and accessories. It’s not just about following trends but curating a unique and confident look that reflects who you are. Fashion is a form of art that can empower and inspire, allowing individuals to feel their best and make a statement in the world.

What is your favourite fashion piece?
A well-tailored native wear, suit, two-piece outfits, a simple polo on jeans, and so on.

What is your favourite local dish?
Omor ebe, a black soup prepared with goat meat and stock catfish with pounded yam.It’s a native soup from the Esan tribe of Edo State where I come from.

Your life mantra
My life mantra is “Embrace diversity and pursue lifelong learning.” My diverse educational background and engagement in various fields, including engineering, linguistics, Real Estate, IT, and acting, reflect a commitment to exploring and embracing different aspects of life. This mantra encapsulates a passion for learning, adaptability, and a desire to continually broaden my horizons, making the most of the rich tapestry of life’s experiences.
