Jakarta: 127 people were killed and 180 injured in a stampede during a football match in Indonesia’s East Java province.
Indonesian police gave this information on Sunday. East Java Police Chief Nico Afinta told reporters that after the match between Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya ended, supporters of the losing team attacked the ground. On this, the police fired tear gas, which led to a stampede. There were cases of suffocation in the accident.

Indonesian top league BRI League 1 has banned games for a week after this match. In this match Persebaya won 3-2. The Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) said that an investigation into the incident has been launched.
