Australian Open 2022 LIVE: Latest updates, scores and results

There are a host of matches to look forward to on day two of the Australian Open, with the action beginning at around midnight GMT.

In the men’s singles, world No 2 Daniil Medvedev faces Henri Laaksonen (02:30). British No 1 Dan Evans takes on David Goffin (03:15) and Andy Murray plays Nikoloz Basilashvili (04:00).

In the women’s singles, Garbine Muguruza, Iga Swiatek, Petra Kvitova, Simona Halep and Aryna Sabalenka are all in action. However, for British fans, all eyes will be on the headline match between US Open champions Emma Raducanu and Sloane Stephens, which is scheduled to begin on Margaret Court Arena at around 10am.

Novak Djokovic was greeted by supporters when he arrived home in Serbia on Monday but another obstacle has been put in his path in the form of a tightening of regulations in France towards the unvaccinated.

The first day of play at the Australian Open was overshadowed by the fallout from the government’s ultimately successful efforts to deport Djokovic ahead of the tournament because of his perceived threat to public health and order.

The world number one left Melbourne on Sunday evening having said in a statement following the verdict of the Federal Court that he would take some time “to rest and to recuperate”.

There is it! At last, Karatsev secures his place in the second round. Few would have expected it to require such a titanic effort after the Russian won the Sydney International last week and it will be hard to recover from five gruelling hours out on court. A special mention to Munar who fought tooth and nail right to the end.

Karatsev might be closing in on victory but, after 4h 30m out on court, it’s far from a forgone conclusion.

The Russian is up 4-3 in the deciding set and needs to hold serve twice to secure an extremely hard-fought place in the second round.

“Not much went to plan today, to be honest, except that I won, but that’s how it is sometimes, it’s the first round of hopefully a very long tournament,” Zverev said after defeating Altmaier in straight sets.

“You’re not always going to play your best tennis, except if you’re Roger or Rafa, you always come out and you’re always perfection, but I’m not like them … it was a good match for me to get into the tournament, and hopefully next time will be better.

Zverev will now play Australian home favourite John Millman in the second round.

“I played him a few times, I played him once at the French Open which was five-and-a-half hours, five sets, so … yeah, he’s a very difficult player to beat … hopefully it’ll be another fun one, and I’m looking forward to being back on court.”

With Zverev and Badosa safely through, that leaves just Karatsev and Munar out on court.

The Russian No 18 seed has just broken to take a 2-1 lead in the deciding set.

What a performance in the second set! Badosa blitzes Tomljanovic 6-0 in no time at all and that confirms her place in the second round. A statement performance from the No 8 seed, whose only concern will be the leg injury she received treatment for.

Meanwhile, Aslan Karatsev is being dragged into deep water by Jaume Munar. The Spaniard, who is ranked No 71 in the world, won the tie-break in the third set before the Russian responded to take the fourth 6-4.

It’s on serve at the start of the fifth and deciding set.

After the treatment break, Badosa rallies to break Tomljanovic’s serve for a second time. That clinches the first set in the Spaniard’s favour. It’s been a high-quality match so far on Margaret Court Arena.

It’s been a great response from Tomljanovic, who’s beating Badosa back behind the baseline with some fierce groundstrokes. She gets the break back and we’re on serve at 4-5 in the opener. There’ll be a short delay as both players receive some on-court treatment.
