About Scholarship
The Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree in AquaCulture, Environment and Society (EMJMD ACES/ACES+) offers Erasmus Mundus scholarships to highly ranked students who wish to start the 2-year degree course in AY 2020-2022, which academic year commences September 2020. This full-time course targets European and international students with a Bachelors degree (or equivalent) in 1 of the fields of aquaculture, marine science, marine biology, biology, environmental or social sciences, who wish to advance their skills.
The successful completion of the study programme will lead to the award of either a joint degree (i.e. one single degree certificate issued on behalf of at least 2 higher education institutions of the EMJMD consortium) or multiple degrees (i.e. at least 2 degree certificates issued by two higher education institutions of the consortium).

Host Institution(s): Students study in different EU countries throughout the programme:
Semester 1: Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS), which is an academic partner of the University of Highlands and Islands, UK. UHI-SAMS is a centre of excellence specialising in the environmental impacts of aquaculture, particularly in cold water marine environments, new innovative technologies and systems to reduce this impact.
Semester 2: University of Crete, Greece – focus on finfish aquaculture.
Semester 3: University of Nantes, France – focus on shellfish aquaculture.
Semester 4: Industry-based research project, and students will be divided amongst all the partner universities (i.e. SAMS-UHI, the Universities of Crete, Nantes or Radboud), based on their choice of topic and availability of staff with the relevant research expertise.

Scholarship value/inclusions
There are 2 categories of scholarships: Partner Country scholarships and Programme Country scholarships.
Partner Country scholarships provide up to € 8,000 per year per scholarship holder from a Partner Country. This includes € 2,000 per year for travel costs + € 1,000 for installation costs for scholars who are resident of a Partner Country situated less than 4,000 km from the EMJMD coordinating institution (i.e. UHI-SAMS). For those located 4,000 km or more from the EMJMD coordinating institution (i.e., UHI-SAMS), a provision of € 3,000 per year for travel costs + € 1,000 for installation costs will be awarded. In addition, a monthly allowance as contribution to subsistence of € 1,000 per month will be given for the entire duration of the EMJMD study programme (i.e. 24 months). A minimum of 75% of the scholarships are awarded to candidates from Partner countries.
Programme Country scholarships provide up to € 4,000 per year per scholarship holder from a Programme Country. This includes € 1,000 per year per scholar for travel and installation costs. In addition, a monthly allowance as contribution to subsistence of € 1,000 per month will be given for the entire duration of the EMJMD study programme (i.e. 24 months).
For both Partner Country and Programme Country Scholarships, the monthly contribution to subsistence will not be given to scholars for the EMJMD periods (study/research/placement/thesis preparation) spent in their country of residence. The monthly subsistence will also not be given to scholars from a Partner country for the EMJMD periods exceeding 1 trimester (i.e. 3 months or the equivalent of 15 ECTS credits) spent in any Partner country.
Contribution to subsistence costs will not be given to scholarship holders for the EMJMD periods (study/research/placement/thesis preparation) spent in their country of residence, nor to scholarship holders from a Partner country for the EMJMD periods exceeding one trimester (i.e. 3 months or the equivalent of 15 ECTS credits) spent in any Partner country.
Eligibility
Eligible applicants for Partner Country scholarships are students who are not nationals of an EU country, Iceland, Norway, Lichtenstein, Turkey or the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM). In addition, they cannot be residents of these countries nor have carried out their main activity (studies, training or work) for more than a total of 12 months over the last 5 years in any of these countries. The 5 year reference period for this 12-month rule is calculated backwards as from the submission deadline (defined by the consortia) of applying for an EMJMD student scholarship.
Eligible applicants for Programme Country scholarships are all other students who do not meet the criteria for Partner Country scholarships (this includes all nationals of the European Union, Iceland, Norway, Lichtenstein, Turkey and FYROM, as well as, people who have spent more than a total of 12 months in the EU over the last 5 years).
Applicants for the EMJMD ACES/ACES+ must possess a Bachelors degree (or equivalent; second class or higher at Honours level) in 1 of the fields of environmental or social sciences, which could be: Aquaculture-related studies, Marine Science, Aquatic Biology, Biology, Environmental Sciences or Marine Resources, Environmental Economics and Environmental Policy. They must have English competence equivalent to 6.5 Academic IELTS (with a minimum of 6.0 in all 4 components). Mature students and those with practical working experience in the aquaculture industry, are particularly welcomed.
